According to Alphaliner data, the total capacity of the top ten container shipping companies increased by 2.6 million TEU, or 13%, over the three-year period from January 1, 2020 to January 1, 2023.
Alphaliner recently published a summary of fleet changes for 2022. The top ten shipping companies' total market share has remained stable, accounting for 85% of the global fleet at the moment and 84% at the start of 2020. During the epidemic period, shipping companies made large profits, and they implemented various fleet strategies, such as actively expanding market share to maintain or even reduce capacity.
MSC has surpassed MAERSK to become the world's largest shipping company, with the greatest increase in capacity. Over the last three years, capacity has increased by 832,000 TEU, a 22% increase. MSC's capacity increased by 7.5% in 2022, primarily through the acquisition of used ships.
CMA CGM is the world's third largest container shipping company, having been fourth prior to the epidemic, and its capacity growth is second only to MSC. CMA CGM's capacity has increased by 697,000 TEU, or 26%, over the last three years. Part of the increase can be attributed to new ships ordered prior to the supercycle and delivered between 2020 and 2021, while capacity has increased by 7.1% in 2022.
HMM is the shipping company with the third highest capacity increase from 2020 to 2022, with a 428,000 TEU increase, moving from tenth place in the world in January 2020 to eighth place today. The capacity has increased by 110% in the last three years (its base is relatively small), the highest increase among the top ten shipping companies. According to Alphaliner, the majority of its expansion will be completed in 2020, thanks to the delivery of twelve new ships and the return of nine ships whose charter contracts were cancelled. In 2022, HMM's capacity growth stalled, and its capacity decreased by 0.4% year on year.
Evergreen Marine is the world's sixth largest shipping company, and it will be seventh in 2020. During the supercycle, its capacity increased by 30% to 385,000 TEU, with a nearly doubling between 2021 and 2022.
